I began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2007 in Maceió, Brazil, under Master Diojone Farias, and earned my brown belt in 2016. After moving to the U.S., I trained and taught at Gracie Barra Boston, where I received my black belt. I also taught BJJ to Boston University students as part of a college program.
In 2021, after moving to South Portland, I was still commuting to Boston to teach. Soon after, I decided to open Gracie Barra South Portland to serve our local community with high-level Jiu-Jitsu.

Both Professor Mario and Ramone are exceptional at their craft and have mastered the art of teaching as well. They are not only highly skilled, but they also take the time to ensure each student improves at their own pace, regardless of skill level. The environment is incredibly welcoming, and from day one, you feel like a part of the family. Everyone, professors, coaches, and fellow students, treats you with respect and encouragement. It’s a fantastic place to train, learn, and grow, both on and off the mats. I highly recommend Gracie Barra for anyone looking to start or continue their Jiu Jitsu journey! I stopped at Gracie Barra last night to train while on vacation from Philadelphia. It was a good experience. Professors Mario and Ramon were both very nice to me. Professor Ramon was a very technical instructor. He went into great detail for how to land and escape a straight ankle foot lock in nogi. Even though I was just there for the night, Professor Ramon took some time to give me some individual instruction and make sure that I was having a good experience. All of the students went out of their way to be nice. Everyone I rolled with had good control, which is a great reflection of the gym and its instructors. I look forward to training there again the next time I’m in town. Owen Johnson2024-06-09Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
